The comments on the John Mayer Earthroamer article are ridiculous. Some of my favorites:

"That looks hard to trail fix. Pass."

For a 90% discount, he could've had this: *Sportsmobile Picture*

"There's definitely an economic bubble today if people are blowing 500k on trucks with campers stuck on the back."

Yah, I worked for Earthroamer for a while and they are actually very nice. They keep enough Ford to be fixable and modify them enough to handle some "decent" offroad. Of course they are not wheeling machines, but they make one hell of a retirement home.

We took them over mountain passes in Leadville and through El Camino Del Diablo in Arizona. They do pretty good. Sure, they are HEAVY so if you get them stuck, call a CAT tractor.

I expected most of the owners to be rich douche's with no clue, but I was really surprised to find that a fair number were actually very cool normal folks. They sold their home and bought an Earthroamer and then towed their Jeep or whatever around the country exploring. One guy was a retired ski school instructor in his 60's who was living his dream with his wife and dogs. They had no other home so although expensive they put everything they owned into it.

I also got to drive quite a few of them. It's like staying in a nice yacht. King size bed, satellite TV and all Yacht level cabinet work. Plus, when you pull into a Walmart parking lot to camp (I didn't always get to go somewhere exotic :-(...) and hit the air suspension OFF button the truck would drop about a foot and then I'd step out. Baller! ;-) haha.

The now defunct XV-JP on the other hand?... Don't get me started. Stay away, very far away. Woof. I built a couple of those and I have very little good to say except that the concept was awesome.

Well depending on whether it is a 2014 or 2015, the turbo would be a pretty hard fix on the trail. 2015 is an upgrade year.

Thanks for sharing! That's so awesome. I have never had a bad experience with folks who pour everything into overland travel. Patient, understanding folks for sure.

My Dad had a truck identical to that. It sat in the driveway for most of the years we owned it, because A. Some days the truck wouldn't start. and B. The transmission went out again.

Agreed. You can spot people who realize that the adventure IS the trip and not the destination vs those who are in a rush to be somewhere else.
